On the importance and uses of the medicinal plants in the world and the challenge they represent to the chemical medicines.
What are the advantages and the disadvantages of each of them?
What could be the future of medicinal plants ?
The Treasures of Green Gold
The origins and the importance of medicinal plants in the world.
This documentary will help us to understand the great wealth of the centuries-old use of medicinal plants, their powers of healing, and the growing interest in the western world for this traditional medicine.
Through the periwinkle example, we learn how a medicine is extracted from a plant. We will also learn how the great steps made in chemistry at the beginning of the XX century led to the development of the powerful pharmaceutical firms and "medicine for the masses" which today are leading to the recognition of the limitations of certain medicines and to a desire to return to nature to discover new possibilities for healing.
Trading in Green Gold
A parallel is drawn between the efficiency and the limitations of both plant and chemical medicines. New therapeutic methods challenge both pharmaceuticals and medical authorities. Faced with spiralling prices and limited available treatments, with the growing interest in a new approach to the body and to health in general, medicinal plants seem destined to play an increasingly important role in the medical future of the planet. But if the (mostly third world) countries where these plants grow are to benefit in any way, the actual despoliation must stop and the pharmaceuticals must understand that the market is not necessarily reserved only for them.
The Shamans of the Future
A new way of working with the Third world countries. A different attitude towards inter-cooperation. A new respect for people and for their birthrights.
The development of a local pharmacopoeia. The important markets that will open up in countries producing medicinal plants. The necessary co-habitation of modernism and tradition. China, an exemplary model. |
