Summary
The traditional healer: "Umuvuzi" remains the therapist chosen by most Rwandan in a country where modern western medicine has almost failed because of the insufficiency of hospital equipment and qualified staff or because of the cultural gap dividing the caring and the cared for.
Nanga Y' Vuza is a general view of the practices used in Rwanda: remedies from medicinal plants, use of exorcisms, musical therapies and even groups' psychotherapies. Discredited by some, encouraged by others, the healers and the traditional medicine in Rwanda and in other countries in development bring a tangible response to the medical problems which the developing countries must face. |
